THE PALMER C. HAYDEN COLLECTION is a central part of the permanent collection at MAAA, giving the public insight into the life and work of one of the leading artists of the Harlem Renaissance. The Palmer C. Hayden Collection of 40 works at MAAA includes the John Henry Series, a narrative art series of 12 oil paintings by Palmer C. Hayden illustrating the story told in the Ballad of John Henry. The permanent collection at MAAA includes works from the United States as well as paintings, masks, batiks, carvings, and ceremonial objects from throughout the African diaspora.

Online Exhibits

To increase free public access to our art collections, the Museum of African American Art has curated two online exhibits on the Google Arts & Culture platform. With detailed text panels, our online exhibits are ready for educators to show in Google Classroom or present as part of other virtual or in-person lessons. The museum's online exhibits can be viewed here on our website (see below) or on the MAAA page on the Google Arts & Culture platform. The Palmer C. Hayden Collection Exhibit features 40 paintings (in seven themed subsections), while the John Henry Series Exhibit features 15 paintings (the 12 paintings from Palmer Hayden's Ballad of John Henry Series plus 3 additional railroad-themed paintings by Palmer Hayden). The Palmer C. Hayden Collection Exhibit is comprehensive and includes all the paintings in the John Henry Series Exhibit. All works shown in the online exhibits are from the Palmer C. Hayden Collection at MAAA.

MAAA image Licensing

  • To request permission to license images from the Palmer C. Hayden Collection at the Museum of African American Art in Los Angeles (MAAA) for scholarly, academic, educational, institutional, documentary, or other qualifying uses that include substantive factual references to Palmer Hayden's life and artwork or to the legend of John Henry, please email the details of your request to the museum's Executive Director. If the requested image use is eligible, you will be asked to complete the MAAA Image License Agreement and pay an appropriate licensing fee.

  • Parties without a fully executed MAAA Image License Agreement AND confirmed payment of the applicable liscensing fees do not have permission to reprint, publish, reproduce, distribute, or otherwise use images from the MAAA Palmer C. Hayden Collection.

  • MAAA regularly receives image permission requests and will respond as quickly as possible, prioritizing those requests that meet the museum's criteria. The standard lead time for image license requests is 6 months to 1 year prior to publication or production. Please contact MAAA well in advance of the publication or production date, so the museum can consider and respond to your image request.

  • GUIDELINES FOR MAAA IMAGE LICENSE REQUESTS

  • —The Museum of African American Art will not grant image license requests for self-published, fictional, promotional, apparel, wearable, decorative, merchandising, misleading, or derogatory uses of images from the museum's collections. —At its sole discretion, MAAA reserves the right to decline image license requests that would create or imply a false association between the requester and artworks in the Palmer C. Hayden Collection at MAAA, or between the requester and the Museum of African American Art.

  • —Accessibility of images from the Palmer C. Hayden Collection at MAAA in the museum's online exhibits, on the Google Arts & Culture platform, or elsewhere on the Internet, does not convey permission for image use and does not indicate that the images are in the public domain with regard to US Copyright.

  • —MAAA's stated intention to send a license agreement for the requester's signature does not in itself constitute an agreement.

  • —Payment of a license fee without a fully executed signed agreement on file with MAAA does not consitute an agreement.

  • —Multiple attempts to contact MAAA and/or failure to receive a response or secure a license agreement does not result in any default permission to proceed with the desired image use.
