Nobody Knows My Name ($12.95) by Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson, illustrated by Theodore Wright IV, is a book about nicknames as a cultural form of endearment. The book lets children know that having a nickname makes them special.
When Michael was born, everyone in his family gave him a nickname: "Dude," Shorty Fats," "Precious," "Sunny," and many others. It wasn't until Michael started kindergarten that his teacher called him by his "real" name. He was so excited to tell his mom, "Somebody knows my name!"
His mom explains to Michael, "I know your name. I call you Sunny because you are special to me, and that's my nickname just for you. Everybody knows your name." She also explains to Michael the history of some very famous people who have nicknames.
The book teaches children that nicknames from their family members are expressions of love, while reminding parents to be sure young children know their "real" names.
Author Betty Johnson's nickname was "Sister." What was yours?
About The Author
The idea for Nobody Knows My Name came when first-time author Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson's grandson, Michael, was born 15 years ago. Everyone in the family had a nickname for him, and Johnson thought it would make a fun children's book. The idea stayed on her mind. She wrote a draft ten years ago, and the manuscript remained in draft form until now.
Johnson has a bachelor's degree in Political Science from California State University, Los Angeles, and a master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. Johnson is a widow with two daughters, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Retired for more than 20 years, she resides in Southern California.
